Starting off the Ten
ghosts of England series, today we look at Bedfordshire
No 1 – The Elderly
Woman
In Barton le Clay –
the former owner of Waterside Mill, reported on two occasions
encountering an old lady with long grey hair, the lady would wave a
bony finger at him as though she wanted him to follower her, of
course he didn't, so we will never know what she truly wanted.
No 2 – The Hanging
Man
Along Church Street in
Ampthill, a hairdressers was an likely place to see a ghostly
manifestation, but when a customer reported seeing a man hanging from
an upstairs room anrr exorcist was called out, the ceremony appears
to have been successful as the hanging man hasn't been seen since.
No 3 – A Gliding Girl
At Bedfordshire
Hospital, in 2010, three members of staff reported seeing a lady in a
long dress walk through a store room wall, eerily in 1972, two nurses
reported witnessing an attractive looking girl in a coat and long
dress glide into a toilet located on the south wing of the hospital,
as they followed her into the room they soon discovered that the room
was empty. Shuffling footsteps have also been said to haunt The Shand
Ward in the hospital.
No 4 – A Hooded Monk
In 1969 in Clophill, a
man out delivering newspapers witnessed a hooded monk on horse back
holding a lantern in the early hours of the morning, he says that the
horse walk right through his car
No 5 – Black Tom
A nineteenth century
highwayman was executed by hanging and buried at the Junction of
Tavistock Street, Clapham Road and Union Street with a stake driven
through his heart to prevent him from returning, though the efforts
appeared to have been in vein as Black Tom and another unnamed ghost
have been seen numerous times since his death. On one occasion a
witness claims to have seen a gruesome man with a broken neck
staggering down the street before vanishing into nothing.
No 6 – Stable Boy
After falling to his
death from a hayloft, a stable boy now haunts the Kitchen to the
Falcon Inn in Bletsoe, the stable boy is blamed for the disappearance
of items that go missing for no real reason, and often reappearing as
inexplicably.
No 7 – A vanishing
Car
In Comworth – driving
down Honeydon Road, 5 people in a car spotted another car in front of
them shortly in the distance, after making a few turns in the road
and coming to a clearing they notice that the car in front had
completely disappeared, with no where to turn off or to pull over. A
speeding driver with no regard for safety, or a ghostly apparition in
car form?
No 8 – The Green Lady
In Church Walk
Kempstone, a Green Lady is reported to appear when mist rolls off the
near by river, she is believed to have drown in the lake, but no body
really knows who she is.
No 9 – A Running
Shadow
In Luton on Old Bedford
Road at the Warden Park Entrance, two witnesses driving home from
work, spotted a tall Black Shadow run through the railings of the
park on to the pavement, the driver thinking the figure would
continue running into the road did an emergency stop, but the black
shadowed figure disappeared. Both Witnesses describe the figure to be
featureless, and looking like nothing more than a tall shadow.
No 10 – The
Hitchhiker
Everywhere has a
similar story to this one, about a hitchhicker. In Leighton Buzzard –
Peddar's Lane to Station Road area a van driver reports that he had
picked up a young dark haired man that disappeared just after a few
minutes into the journey.
